FAQ

When and why did you start your blog?

I started my blog in November of 2014, and it was a rough first year! I definitely wasn’t consistent (I mean… I’m still not), but I knew I just wanted to share my love and eye for fashion and styling. My mom says I have been styling outfits for as long as she can remember. When I was around 8, I laid out all of my outfits (I mean accessories and all) for a week straight on my bed. I refused to go bed in my bed, because I didn’t want to mess up my outfits, haha! But as I got older and during college, I was constantly asked advice on what matched what and what looked good together. After some hesitation, I finally took the plunge and created my blog, House of Style! I created House of Style, because I wanted to show that you don’t have to have a particular ‘style’  or fit into any type of fashion mold. You don’t have to be preppy, hipster, etc. You can just wear what you wanna wear and what you feel comfortable in. Everyday my outfit is a little bit different from the last, and I love it like that!

Who takes your photos?

Everyone, haha! But seriously… My friends, sister, and mom have been a big help! When I lived in Charlottesville, I hired a photographer to take my photos and it was really nice, but cost money! Currently, I take trips home to Chesapeake, VA for my mom to take photos of me.

What type of camera and lens do you use?

Currently I use a Nikon d3000 and have upgraded the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6g kit lens to a 50mm f/1.8D lens. My advice would be to spend your money on lenses, and not the camera body!

Do you blog full-time or do you have a full-time job?

I do not blog full-time as my job. I work full-time as an ICU nurse at a DC hospital. I also work full-time nights so I work 7pm-7-8am (nurses never leave on time, ever). I have the weirdest sleep schedule, so life is crazy!

If you work full-time, how do you manage time for your blog?

I typically try to work on my blog on my days off. However, that can be extremely difficult because I am usually exhausted… I barely sit down during my 12/13 hour shifts. My advice would be to work on your blog at night during the weekdays. Usually, there isn’t much going on so you won’t feel like you’re missing out on life and then you can keep your weekends free. Sunday night is also a prime blogging night for me 🙂

Where did you go to school and what did you major in?

I went to Virginia Tech for my first undergraduate degree of Biology with a minor in Chemistry. After graduation, I went straight to Duke University for their nursing program and received another bachelors in Nursing. Obviously, I love the ACC!

How old are you and where do you currently live?

I am currently 25 and live in Washington D.C with my roommate. I previously lived in Charlottesville, VA and Durham, NC.

What advice do you have for new bloggers?

It’s okay to take a break from blogging. Sometimes you can get burnt out, and that’s fine! Blogging can also be a really materialistic world, so be sure you don’t lose sight of what’s really important in life (which is partly why I love my job because it quickly brings me back to reality). I would also say to make sure you draw a line between blog time and personal time. No one wants to hang out with someone whose life is revolved around pictures. This is where hiring a designated photographer is a great idea. You won’t interrupt your time with family and friends, you’ll have a time sectioned off for photos and your blog.
